MANILA, Philippines — If only to emphasize how serious the country is in its bid to host the FIBA-Asia Championship in 2013, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) submitted a comprehensive cover letter to FIBA-Asia office Thursday.
Upon the order of SBP president Manny V. Pangilinan, Sonny Barrios already emailed the letter to FIBA-Asia Secretary-General Dato Yeoh Choo Hock a day before the deadline.
“We will definitely go for it,” said Barrios Thursday. “We don’t want to send it on the last day. We prepared a comprehensive cover letter.”
Barrios explained that the bidding form that FIBA-Asia has given them is a “simple piece of paper where you can just check what event the association wants to host.”
“But for us, we attached a letter, if only to indicate how super serious we are to host it, we elaborate what’s behind of our wish to host it,” said Barrios after getting the go signal from Pangilinan.
Aside from the Philippines, there were reports that Lebanon and China will also submit their bids to host the meet.
Lebanon was supposed to host the recently-conclude FIBA-Asia Championship, the qualifier for the London Olympics, but because of issues on facilities, FIBA-Asia officials transferred the event in Wuhan, China where the Chinese national team bagged the gold medal and the Olympic berth.
