The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will honor on Monday the members of the Philippine Dragon Boat Team that won five gold medals and two silver ones in a recent tournament in Tampa Bay in Florida, USA.
The team members will be given the Military Merit Medals “for their meritorious and exceptional achievement during the 10th International Dragon Boat Federation World Championships from Aug. 1 to 7," said AFP public affairs office chief Col. Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos on Sunday.
Burgos said the medals will be conferred after the 7:30 a.m. flag-raising ceremony at the AFP general headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
Leading the awardees are team manager Maj. Harold Cabunoc and team captain Sgt. Usman Anterola, who are both from the Philippine Army.
Also among the recipients are six personnel from Army, two from the Air Force, and one from Navy.
Known as the Dragon Warriors, the team set five new world records in the prestigious sports competition that saw 17 countries competing.
“The Philippine Team beat favorite and highly rated countries like Australia, Italy, USA, Canada, Puerto Rico and Japan," Burgos noted.
AFP chief Gen. Eduardo Oban said the team exemplified discipline, determination and teamwork that earned them international recognition and distinct honor not only for the AFP but also for the Filipino people.
“They will serve as an inspiration to the AFP as the Filipino soldiers continue to perform their sworn duty in service to the nation," he said. — KBK, GMA News
